Physical Therapy & Neurological Conditions
Certain neurological disorders can turn out to be very severe. Some of these disorders can also be dangerous and affect the life of the patient drastically. There are a number of such neurological conditions and physiotherapy can help in curing some of them. One of the most dangerous neurological disorders is the Alzheimer’s disease which cuts short the life of old people. It can also occur in people whose age is 40 years and even lesser. ALS is another neurological disease which reduces the ability of the spinal cord to move. However, physiotherapy has proven to cur both these disorders in many cases. The Parkinson’s disease can result in the loss of coordination and creates problems in walking. Again, physiotherapy can offer some amount of relief to such patients.
Neurological disorders which come under the category of autoimmune diseases are extremely hard to heal. One such disease is Myasthenia Gravis which causes weakness in the muscles due to bad communication between the muscles and nerves. In order to heal this type of neurological disorder, a great deal of physical therapy in required. Some of the methods in the physical therapy for this disorder are strength training and help with common chores. However, if one exercises too much, then the Myasthenia Gravis disorder will only become worse instead of becoming better. Generally the people suffering from neurological disorders are unable to carry on their day to day activities like taking care of themselves or their homes and family members. They are also unable to perform at work. They also experience trouble in walking, standing and climbing stairs. These patients also experience problems in eating food, swallowing and even breathing. This often results in dizziness and poor balance. Such people do not have much endurance. Although surgeries and medications can to some extent improve their conditions, they cannot be completely healed and will continue to be plagued by these disorders. This is where physical therapy comes into play. It provides solutions that the other branches of science are unable to.
As in all other methods of physiotherapy, exercise also helps in healing neurological disorders to some extent. Stretching and strengthening exercises are most commonly employed. The people suffering from such neurological disorders need aerobic exercises. The physical therapists involved should make an exercise plan which involves aerobics. The plan should include balance training as well as coordination training. By exercising in these two skills, the person will be able to perform aerobic exercise and other forms of exercise in a better way. For some patients, water exercises are also employed.
The patients who are suffering from neurological disorders will have to live with some of the problems resulting from it, for physical therapy can reduce the effects of many but not completely remove them. However, it does help in making the lives of such people easier and pleasant, more effectively than any surgical procedures.
Physical therapy is both a preventive as well a curative art. In the west, physical therapy is a very important part of health care and is fast catching up with the rest of the world. A physiotherapist acts like a psychoanalyst who can replace the patient’s despair with hope. A good physical therapist will develop certain strategies for avoiding future injuries as well as maintaining the overall health, tissues, posture and joints besides relieving pain. More than 80% of the cases involving dysfunctions and joint pains have been successfully cured through the rehabilitation programs of physical therapy. Physiotherapy enhances the quality of the lives of people by using a scientific approach and cures the ailments through biomechanical means.
